I’m Going to Be an American Football Star

I want to share some insight on something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately, which is finding a balance between work and personal life.

I have a lot of joy outside of business, but being so heavily invested in my business, sometimes I have trouble getting my head out of work mode. Life is not all about business, and that is a difficult insight for many entrepreneurs to gain. The last few weeks, I have been keeping this in mind and feeling more present with life.

On a recent month-long trip with my family, I had the opportunity to realize, “Okay. Chill, enjoy your family.” It took me a couple of weeks into the trip, but then it clicked. I thought to myself,

“Your business will still survive and thrive. You don’t need to be productive all of the time. Having fun is important.”

A few weekends ago, we opened a new office in Amsterdam on a Friday and there was an office warming party to celebrate the occasion. There was also a show in Eindhoven that night, which is over an hour from Amsterdam, featuring Pharoahe Monch, M.O.P., and a few other hip-hop artists. Luckily, my office party ended early enough that I was able to head over to the show afterwards.

My brother was already there when we arrived, and he is a big hip-hop fan and even knows the members of M.O.P. He was able to get us backstage with the performers and we all had a lot of fun. We were out until 5:00 in the morning and it took me a few days to recover from that night, but it was an amazing time.

More recently, I was having dinner with a friend of mine in Amsterdam and a stranger came up to our table. He asked my age and I told him I was 34. He said, “Oh, that’s perfect. I want you on my team.” I was confused and asked him what he was talking about. He asked me, “Do you know American football? I’m the coach of the Amsterdam Crusaders. I saw you walking and, I’m sorry, but you have to be on my team. I’ll pay for your first year. I’ll pay for everything, but you have to come.”

I don’t have a clue about American football. I don’t know the rules or anything. He said he would teach me everything and I was thinking, “This is so funny.” So next Sunday, I’m going to go to the game and I’m even thinking about giving it a try because I think I will like the sport.

The last couple of weeks, I have been seeing all these signs that I need to have fun and enjoy life. I need to embrace my business, but also embrace life.

I believe there are three main things that we need to balance:

It can be a challenge, which is why you must make it a goal to maintain a balance…

Health is most important because without your health, you cannot be a great businessperson and you cannot be there 100% for your loved ones.

The second is your family. You always need to be there for your family.

The third thing is your legacy. Having a business is great, but eventually, you will look back and think, “What is my legacy?” This is something I have been thinking about a lot lately too.

When I was at a concert in Florida a while ago, I met with Elliott Hulse and asked him, “What is your biggest insight?” He told me, “Have fun with life,” and he is right. We often have times where we are working hard and enjoying all these amazing things in our profession, but on the other hand, it is so important to have fun in life. These two things do not always go together easily.

It can be a challenge, which is why you must make it a goal to maintain a balance of these three things: Have a successful business and enjoy it, but also make time for your family and have joy outside of your business.
