Being Out Of Balance: How to Cope

Finding a balance between work and leisure time is a big challenge that many of us face. We can become unbalanced by spending too much time being productive or on the opposite end, by spending too much time relaxing. Most of us view being out of balance as a bad thing, but it does not necessarily have to be.

The reality is that many of us spend most of our time off-balance. As you may know, I went on a family trip not too long ago and spent a month traveling to the United States, Curacao, and Mexico. I was off-balance during the trip because I wasn’t being productive. Many times for entrepreneurs, no motion equals bad emotion, meaning that when we are not advancing our business, we feel bad. However, I realized that I would be off-balance during this trip and focused on enjoying my quality time with loved ones. I was off-balance in the period before I went on the trip – in the form of working my ass off.

When you feel like your life is out of balance, just acknowledge it. You should embrace the flow and go with it.

Now, I feel as if I am getting back into balance. I am having fun with my friends and family, but also being creative, productive, and growing my business. Even though I feel like I am coming back into balance right now, I know that my life will once again go off-balance in the near future.

When you feel like your life is out of balance, just acknowledge it. You should embrace the flow and go with it. If you take the mindset of, “I am out of balance and I am embracing that for now,” then you will not feel guilty. Otherwise, it is really easy to feel as if you are neglecting your loved ones or you are neglecting your work.

This is a tough concept to grasp, but if you are able to get it, your life will be different. You will be more present and enjoy life more. If you are going to relax, just relax and embrace it rather than being anxious because you are not being productive at that moment. As an entrepreneur, if you don’t want to work today, then don’t. You can do whatever you want, just make sure you are okay with the decision you’ve made.

Life is about happiness, fun, and joy, not about stress.

We think life is about our achievements, but it isn’t. I always ask myself, “How will I look back on my life and what will I think?” I don’t think it will be, “I wish I had more productive days.” Instead, I will probably think, “I had some amazing times with my friends and family.”

A little while ago, I was in Ibiza with a few friends for two days. One of these friends has a good lifestyle, rewarding career, and a lot of freedom. He was talking to me about how much freedom entrepreneurs have and I told him, “It’s true, but it’s different. You can’t compare those two.” When someone has a job, they aren’t thinking about it on the weekends, but entrepreneurs are thinking about their company most of the time, even when relaxing.

Anyway, on the trip to Ibiza, I actually didn’t spend too much time thinking about work. I knew I was going to have a good time with my friends and I made a commitment to be present. Even though I may have missed some growth opportunities, I wasn’t beating myself up about it. I acknowledged that my life was off-balance during that trip and realized that was okay. Try to do the same the next time your life tilts off-balance one way or the other.
