Too Much Time to Worry

I want to share with you something I learned from personal experience about things that worry us in business.

Five years ago, I had a big realization. My wife and I we went to Jamaica and right before we left, I had a conversation with our customer service guy because he was leaving the company to start his own business. Our conversation was all good, no bad things, he was just leaving because he wanted to start his own business. This meant I had to find someone else for the customer support position – which is not a big deal. I have been in business now for 15 years, I have a lot of people in customer support, and hiring someone really is not a major thing.

A lot of the stress we have in our work and personal lives is because we have too much time to worry and the small things become big things.

Yet on our trip, I found myself continually thinking about filling this position. For two weeks I thought about it over and over. Who should I hire? Should I hire freelance or put someone on payroll? The thing is, it is really no big deal, but I worried about this for the entire two week vacation.

When we came back I found quickly found someone. I went online, put in the information and in about two days, I had hired someone. While I was on vacation, I had allowed this issue to become a big deal because I had too much time to worry. That was when I realized too much time to worry can be bad for us.

A lot of the stress we have in our work and personal lives is because we have too much time to worry and the small things become big things.

For example, if you have nothing going on in your business and you have two issues, these two issues are a big deal. One hundred percent of your attention will be focused on solving these problems and they are huge in your mind. However, imagine having 100 positive things going on in your business and having those same two issues arise. In that situation, they would seem minor. So when we have momentum and things are going great and problems come up we just tackle the problem – no big deal.

Action is what will keep you from worrying too much, and action often is a result of having a higher purpose.

So, here is my advice: when you worry too much about things that should not be a big deal, it is probably because you don’t have enough cool or exciting things going on around you. When you have an exciting business or an exciting life, most of your problems are not a big deal. You just handle them.

If you find yourself worrying too much, you probably have the wrong goals, or not a high drive, or maybe you do not have a higher purpose. In that case, you should work on those things. If you have goals, ambitions, and a higher purpose, then you do not have time to worry about all the little things that arise.

Action is what will keep you from worrying too much, and action often is a result of having a higher purpose. If you do not have clear goals, then that is the problem you really need to be working on.
